Laser Hair Removal
Leamington Spa

MEDICAL-GRADE laser hair removal is DIFFERENT

Unlike your standard IPL laser hair removal treatments available on the high street, we have the Inmode Diolaze XL:

  • Less painful

  • Quicker

  • More precise

*than typical IPL treatments

Laser hair removal reduces unwanted hair for the long term by treating the follicle itself, rather than taking hair off at the surface for a few days. Our Diolaze XL device covers a large area with each pulse, so appointments are shorter than they would be on a smaller handpiece. And its chilled sapphire tip cools your skin before, during and after every pulse, for your comfort and to protect the skin's surface while the heat reaches the follicle.

At The Avery Clinic in the centre of Leamington Spa, every course begins with a consultation and a patch test, so you find that out before you commit to anything. Treatment is carried out on the InMode Diolaze XL in a doctor-led clinic.

What areas can be treated?

Laser hair removal can be carried out on most areas of the face and body. The areas we treat most often are:

• Face: upper lip, chin, jawline and sides of the face

• Neck

• Underarms

• Arms and forearms

• Bikini line

• Legs

• Chest and back

Not every area suits every person, and some areas respond more predictably than others. Your initial consultation covers each area you want treated and what you can realistically expect from it

Why choose The Avery Clinic?

The Avery Clinic is a multi-award-winning, doctor-led clinic in the heart of Leamington Spa, founded by Dr Alison Colville (GP and aesthetics doctor). Because we're medically led, your lesions are assessed with a clinician's eye, not just removed, but properly considered first. We hold Save Face accreditation with Platinum safety status, and our whole approach is built around making you feel supported, informed and genuinely cared for.

More about Laser Hair Removal...

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal uses precisely controlled wavelengths of light to reduce unwanted hair. The light is absorbed by the melanin, the pigment, inside the hair follicle. That absorbed energy turns into heat, and the heat disables the follicle's ability to produce hair.

For that to work, the laser needs to tell the hair apart from the skin around it, and it does that by looking for pigment. The darker the hair and the lighter the surrounding skin, the more clearly the follicle stands out and the more precisely the energy can be aimed at it. It is also why the treatment does very little for hair with almost no pigment in it, such as white, grey or very fair hair.

A follicle that has been properly treated either stops producing hair altogether or produces something much finer and weaker than before. That is why laser is described as a reduction rather than a removal. Over a course of sessions more and more of the follicles in an area are treated, and what is left grows back progressively lighter and sparser.

How many sessions will I need?

Hair grows in cycles, and a laser can only affect a follicle that is in its active growth phase at the moment of treatment. At any given time only a proportion of the hair in an area is in that phase, which is why a single session cannot clear an area and why the sessions have to be spaced out.

Most people need a course of six to eight sessions to reach a result they are happy with, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart for the face and six to eight weeks apart for the body. The exact number depends on the area, your hair type, your skin type and whether there is a hormonal driver behind the hair growth. Your plan is agreed at consultation and reviewed as we go.

What happens at your appointment

Your first visit is a consultation and a patch test. We take a medical history, look at your skin and hair, discuss what you want to achieve, and test a small area at the settings we intend to use. We then leave enough time to check how your skin has responded before your first full treatment.

Getting the preparation right matters more for laser than for most treatments, because the settings that are safe for untanned skin are not safe for tanned skin. Please follow these in the weeks and days before each session:

• Avoid sunbeds, deliberate sun exposure and fake tan for three to four weeks beforehand.

• Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate for four to six weeks beforehand. The laser needs the root of the hair still in place.

• Shave the area within twenty four hours of your appointment.

• Stop retinoids, acids and any other irritant topical products on the area two to three days beforehand.

• Come with clean skin, free of make-up, deodorant, moisturiser and self-tan.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

No. Laser hair removal gives long-term hair reduction rather than permanent removal. After a full course most people are left with substantially less hair, and what grows back is usually finer and lighter, held with occasional maintenance sessions. Electrolysis is the only method properly described as permanent hair removal.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people need six to eight sessions, spaced around four to six weeks apart on the face and six to eight weeks apart on the body. The number depends on the area, your hair and skin type, and whether there is a hormonal cause behind the hair growth.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people describe it as a warm snapping sensation against the skin. The handpiece cools the skin before, during and after each pulse, which takes the edge off it. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip and bikini line are felt more than the legs or arms.

What is the difference between laser and IPL hair removal?

IPL releases a broad spectrum of light across many wavelengths. A diode laser releases specific wavelengths chosen for the job, which allows it to be targeted more precisely at the hair follicle and to reach a consistent depth. We use the Diolaze XL diode laser for hair removal, and our Lumecca IPL for pigmentation and vascular concerns.

Do I need to shave before my appointment?

Yes. Shave the area within twenty four hours of your appointment. Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate for four to six weeks beforehand, because the laser needs the root of the hair to be there.

Does it work on blonde, red or grey hair?

Not well. The laser works by targeting pigment in the hair, and fair, red, grey and white hairs contain very little. If your hair falls into these categories we will tell you at consultation rather than sell you a course that is unlikely to deliver.

Can I have laser hair removal if I have PCOS?

Yes, and many women with polycystic ovary syndrome do. Because there is an ongoing hormonal driver stimulating the hair, you should expect to need more sessions and continuing maintenance. We will set that expectation clearly at your consultation
