There’s a certain frustration that comes with redness, pigmentation and uneven skin tone. The flare of flushing, the stubbornness of sun damage, the patchy discolouration that no amount of concealer can quite disguise, it’s all part of the same story.
But there is a way to reset your skin. To address both redness and pigmentation in one go, safely, effectively, and with long-lasting results?
At The Avery Clinic, I’m delighted to introduce Lumecca IPL, the most powerful and advanced Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment available. Whether your concerns stem from sun exposure, rosacea, thread veins or lingering post-inflammatory marks, Lumecca offers a sophisticated, clinically-proven solution to restore clarity, evenness and radiance to the skin.
If you know me already, you’ll know that I only choose evidence-based, and high quality treatments, and this is my most recent addition that I can’t wait to offer.

What is Lumecca IPL?
Lumecca is a type of laser that essentially airbrushes the skin, targeting redness or pigmentation.
Lumecca is an advanced form of IPL, but it’s important to stress that not all IPL devices are created equal. Traditional IPL systems can require multiple sessions with modest gains. Lumecca, on the other hand, uses higher peak power and optimised light delivery, meaning we can achieve more dramatic improvements in fewer treatments, with greater safety and precision.
Lumecca works by delivering intense pulses of light that target the excess pigment in melanin (brown spots) and haemoglobin in blood vessels (redness and thread veins). These targeted cells absorb the light energy, which then breaks them down so the body can naturally clear them away.
What remains is brighter, more even, healthier-looking skin — with minimal downtime and long-term benefits.
What Can Lumecca IPL Treat?
Lumecca is particularly effective for addressing a range of common, and often frustrating, skin concerns, including:
Sun damage and age spots
Freckles and pigmentation irregularities
Rosacea and generalised facial redness, helping to control redness for months afterwards
Broken capillaries and thread veins
Post-inflammatory pigmentation (marks left behind after acne or injury)
Uneven skin tone and dullness
It can be used across various areas of the body, but it is especially transformative when used on the face, neck, chest, and hands — the areas most prone to sun exposure and visible ageing.

Who Can't have Lumecca IPL?
Lumecca IPL isn’t suitable for everyone, and in some cases it can worsen the skin condition so a thorough consultation first is a MUST.
Here are some of the cases that can't have Lumecca:
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have melasma (rather than simple sun damage pigmentation), as IPL can make it worse
Have darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick V–VI), due to a higher risk of pigment changes
Have active skin infections, cold sores, or open wounds in the treatment area
Have recently used Roaccutane (within the past 6–12 months)
Have recently had strong chemical peels, laser resurfacing, or excessive sun exposure
Have a history of keloid scarring
Have certain medical conditions that affect healing or increase sensitivity to light (including photosensitive epilepsy)
Are taking medications or supplements that cause photosensitivity (e.g. some antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, or herbal remedies like St John’s Wort)
Have uncontrolled diabetes or other conditions that compromise skin repair
Have a history of skin cancer in the treatment area
Have a suntan or fake tan at the time of treatment (the skin needs to be its natural colour for safety)
What Causes Redness and Pigmentation?
Understanding the causes can be helpful when deciding whether Lumecca is the right option for you:
Redness is often driven by dilated blood vessels close to the surface of the skin, a hallmark of rosacea, sun damage, or environmental stress.
Pigmentation can result from sun exposure, hormonal changes (such as melasma), or simply the skin’s natural ageing process where melanin becomes unevenly distributed.
These two issues can often overlap, especially in sun-damaged skin, where you may notice both mottled pigmentation and vascular marks contributing to an uneven tone. Lumecca’s precision allows us to target both simultaneously.
What is the Treatment Like? And does Lumecca hurt?
A Lumecca treatment will always begin with a comprehensive skin consultation to assess the areas of concern, determine your skin type and sensitivities, and create a tailored treatment plan.
After we have gently cleansed the skin, we apply a clear gel which aids the laser wand providing contact with the skin. We'll give you some black-out goggles to protect your eyes and make sure you're comfortable on the bed.
The procedure itself is quick and comfortable and doesn’t require any numbing at all. You’ll experience a warm feeling from the bright flash of light and a sensation similar to the flick of an elastic band. We use advanced cooling to ensure the skin remains protected and comfortable throughout.

What is the downtime after a Lumecca IPL treatment?
One of the lovely things about Lumecca IPL is that there’s very little downtime, so no need to hide away for days. After your treatment, your skin may look a little flushed, as though you’ve been out in the sun, and any areas of pigmentation may darken before they naturally flake away over the following week or so. This is all part of the process and a sign that the treatment is working.
Most people are happy to carry on with their usual activities straight after and one advantage is that you can wear makeup up straight away afterwards too. The key is to keep your skin protected with SPF, as it will be more sensitive to sunlight in the days following your session.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
While some patients see significant improvement after just one session, I usually recommend a course of 2-5 treatments for optimal, lasting results. We’ll discuss your goals and create a schedule that works for your skin’s needs and your lifestyle.
Why I’ve Chosen Lumecca for The Avery Clinic
As ever, I’m meticulous about the treatments and devices we offer, they must not only be safe, but also effective, evidence-based and capable of delivering tangible results.
Lumecca ticks every box. It delivers on its promise to visibly reduce redness, fade pigmentation, and restore brightness, all with minimal downtime. For my patients seeking a genuine improvement in skin quality, clarity and overall radiance, this is the gold standard.
